SCHOOL ALIENATION AND ACADEMIC SELF-EFFICACY IN PROSPECTIVE TEACHERS: A INVESTIGATION OF CHAID ANALYSIS

Abstract

The main aim of this research is to exemine the perceptions of prospective teachers towards school alienation and academic self-efficacy, and to analyses the demografic effective in the perceptions using the CHAID Analysis method. The research was carried out in education faculty in Muş Alparslan University during the 2014–2015 academic year. A total of 537 prospective teachers, 297 girls and 240 boys, from 6 different department of education faculty in Muş Alparslan University and districts participated in the research. In order to determine the prospective teachers' perceptions, the Student Alienation Scale (SAS) developed by Çağlar (2012) and The Academıc Self-Effıcacy Scale (ASES) which adapted by Yılmaz, Gürçay and Ekici (2007) in Turkish developed by Jerusalem and Schwarzer (1981) was applied. SPSS software was used for data analysis. The collected data were analyzed through CHAID analysis method. The alpha value of .05 was established as a level of significance. After the analysis, it was determined that the prospective teachers had a mid-level perception towards school alienation. In addition, a negative significance relationship was observed between student alienation and academic self-efficacy. As a result significant differences were found between SAS scores of the students in terms of gender, male students have higher scores than female students. It was also found that there were significant differences between SAS scores of the students in terms of grade levels, number of brothers/sisters, the place where the family lived, academic self-effıcacy in the department of education faculty they were attending.
