Abstract

One of the important functions of Turkish lessons is to improve students’ main language skills. In performing these important functions, the text in the textbooks has important place. In addition to the improve students’ reading and understanding skills, the texts have the function of enriching their vocabulary. In this respect, it should be paid attention on selecting the texts supporting the students’ vocabulary. Moreover, the dictionaries should be prepared carefully since they are the resources that the students examine in order to find the means of the unknown words. In the present study, the words directing the students to the dictionaries in the activities of the means in the words in the textbook designed by Cem Veb Ofset were identified. Then, the frequency of taking place of these words in the dictionaries prepared for elementary students was determined. In the study designed based on document analysis as a type of qualitative research, ten school dictionaries were selected randomly and examined. In the light of the findings of the present study, the words in the activities usually took place in school dictionaries and they are suitable for the students to be used.
