Abstract

Place-based education is an instructional and educational approach established through utilizing the specific features of social and natural environment in which one lives. Place-based education has 5 sub-dimensions: cultural studies, natural studies, problem-solving processes, entrepreneurship opportunities, and social studies. The aim of this study was to evaluate the Social Studies curriculum and the textbooks for grades 1, 2 and 3 in primary school in terms of the features of five sub-dimensions of place-based education, and the extent to which these features are reflected in the curriculum and textbooks. The study group included the Social Studies Curriculum for Grades 1, 2 and 3, and the Social Studies Coursebook and Workbook for Grade 1, which were used during the 2014-2015 school year, and Social Studies Coursebook and Workbook for Grade 2, and Social Studies Coursebook and Workbook for Grade 3 (MEB Publications). In the study, the qualitative research method was used and the data were obtained through document review. In analyzing the data, the descriptive analysis method, one of the qualitative research techniques, was used. The data obtained through documents were organized by the sub-dimensions of place-based education, and presented in tables.
