Abstract

This study has been conducted with a view to determining the scale-performing levels of music preservice teachers during a period of four years. The study is important in revealing to what extent scale-arpeggio and cadences, which are included in the Music Education Undergraduate Level of Higher Education, are trained and taught during the process of training music teachers. In the study, the preservice teachers were asked 7 questions; in which of the 24 compulsory scales did they have a training? and for which of the related 24 scales did they have a training according the standards that are established in Undergraduate Program of Music Education? Among the participiants of the study are 87 undergraduate music preservice techers still studying 4th grade at the Departments of Music Education in Marmara University, Abant İzzet Baysal University, Trakya University and Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University during spring term in 2014-2015 education year. According to the findings, it has been found that scale-performing levels of music preservice teachers are considerably low. With the findings at hand, several suggestions have been made with regard to the compulsory scale training that are required to be included in the curriculum of undergraduate piano lessons of music education.
