THE EFFECT OF PEER SUPPORT ON ADAPTATION TO UNIVERSITY LIFE IN FIRST YEAR STUDENTS OF THE FACULTY OF HEALTH SCIENCES

Abstract

Peer support is a significant influence on the university life a challenging process for students. This study was conducted in a descriptive way to investigate the effect of peer support on adaptation to university life in first year students of the faculty of health sciences. The study group consisted of 274 first year students in the departments of nursing, health management, social services, nutrition and dietetics, physiotherapy and rehabilitation at the Faculty of Health Sciences. The personal information form consisting of five questions, “the Peer Support Scale” and “the Adaptation to University Life Scale” were used in collecting the data. Numbers, percentages, means, standard deviations, t-test, one-way ANOVA, correlation analysis and regression analysis were used in analyzing the data. It was found that the peer support and adaptation to university life levels of the first year students of the Faculty of Health Sciences were higher than the average. Adaptation to university life scores of nursing students were found higher than the students in other departments. It was determined that there is a positive relationship between adaptation to university life and peer support affected adaptation to university life and 20% of the total variance of the adaptation to university life was explained by peer support.
