EXISTENCE LEVELS OF RADIATION SUBJECT IN TURKEY’S SCHOOL BOOKS

Abstract

Due to the crucial outcomes of “radiation” which become widespread in every sphere of the life by artefacts in the last century and is exposed by people in daily life are considered; this research aims to identify to what extent topic of the radiation takes place in current curriculum of the Turkish Schools. This research in which qualitative research methodology was used was conducted with the help of analysis of documents. Within the scope of the research, syllabus of the Science lesson/course (3rd, 4th, 5th 6th 7th and 8th grade), Social studies lesson (1st, 2nd and 3rd grade) at the level of elementary and middle school, the syllabus and the student books of the physics, chemistry and biology lessons at the level of high school were analyzed. Content analysis was performed on the data of the study. . The education about the topic of radiation at early ages is important. As a result of the analysis of the data, it is realized that the topic of the radiation does not take place sufficiently in the syllabus of the elementary and middle schools. In addition to that, compared to syllabus of the middle schools, the syllabus of the elementary schools includes topic of the radiation much more shallowlyTherefore, the syllabus of the elementary and middle schools should include topic of the radiation in extensive manner.
