Abstract

This study is intended to measure the effect of narration technique, used in the teaching of the concepts included in the book unit titled “Reproduction, Growth and Development in Plants and Animals” of Science and Technology course taught for the 6th Grade of primary schools, on the success and attitudes of students. The sample group of the study consisted of 48 6th-Grade students from the 23rd June Primary School in Erzurum. The study was based on an experimental model with a control group and it included pre-tests and post-tests. The data of the study were collected in five weeks of the second term of 2015-2016 Academic Year. The data were collected through two main scales called “Academic Success Test” and “Attitude Survey for the Science and Technology Course”. The study was carried out in an applied manner: the experimental group was given stories prepared by the researchers and the unit was taught with the use of these stories. In addition, the students were asked to write their own stories related to the subject matter at the end of the class. As for the control group, the unit was taught through the classical lecturing method. SPSS 16,00 programme was used in the analysis of the data. In the analysis of the data, three statistical processes were used: arithmetic mean (x), standard deviation (S), and Mann-Whitney U. It was realised that there was a meaningful difference in post-test points of “Academic Success Test” in favour of the experimental group. It was also detected that the method used did not change students’ attitudes towards science and technology course.
