Abstract

The aim of this research is to evaluate the effects of social skills program given to preschool immigrant children who migrated from abroad or inland on their coping with stress. It is quasi experimental research with a control group and carries pretest posttest model with nonequivalent groups design. The participants are 13 female and 15 male preschool students with a total of 28 who attend public Kadifekale Zübeyde Hanım Elementary School in Konak, İzmir. The participating children were divided into two groups and 12 of them were placed into the experimental group while the remaining 16 were put into the control group. The participating children in the experimental group were given a pretest and posttest named “Teacher, Parent and Child Control Lists” developed by McGinnis (2016) to measure their stress coping ability within the framework of social skills training program. During the implementation phase the part named skills for dealing with stress developed by McGinnis (2016) was used. The children were taught skills regarding relaxation, coping with their mistakes, being honest, knowing when to tell, coping with defiance, wanting to be the number one, saying no, accepting the answer no and deciding what to do during one and a half month long training period. The results indicated that preschool children in the experiment group differed meaningfully in coping with stress from the children in the control group. The results depicted a difference in favor of the experiment group.
