Abstract

In this study, it has been tried to determine whether “Activity and Structure Based Paragraph Writing Method” which teaches students paragraph writing through activities and the structure of the paragraph is effective or not in improving students’ consistent paragraph writing skills. 2015-2016 academic year spring term 8th grade students of İMKB 23 Nisan Middle School located in the city center of Kırşehir Province constitute the universe of this study. The sample of this study is two classes randomly selected. Both the experimental group and the control group consisted of 15 students. The study lasted 8 weeks. Pre-test and post-test control grouped quasi-experimental model has been used in this study. Paragraph Coherence Assessment Scale was used to obtain data and dependent and independent t test was used for the analysis of the obtained data. The significance level in the study was accepted as 0,05. As a result of the research There was a significant difference between pre-test and post-test total score averages that students in the experimental group obtained from the paragraphs they wrote. However, there was no significant difference between pre-test total score averages and post-test score averages taken from the paragraph of the compositions written by the control group students. The consistency of the paragraph writing skills of the students in the experimental group was found to be significantly improved when the average of the post-test scores obtained from the written paragraphs of the students in the experimental group and the average of the post-test scores obtained from the compositions of the students in the control group were compared. There was a significant difference between the scores that experimental group students obtained from the preliminary test on Structure / Conclusion Thesis, Integrity / Connection elements in the paragraph hand the scores that they obtained after the paragraph writing education.
