WHAT DO CHILDREN UNDERSTAND FROM IDIOMS?

Abstract

Words have a great significance in expressing and interpretation of narrated feeling and thoughts. There are many literary components that support this process. One of them is idiom. The aim of this study is to measure 5-8 year old early childhood children ability of making sense of idioms. This study is qualified qualitative model. Findings that attained from document analysis are subjected to content analysis. In the research group of this study, twenty children between 5-8 year old from Uşak and 195 fables are took part. 195 fables are examined in the study. In 153 fables in them, 683 idioms are determined. 6 idioms which are 3 most repeated idioms and 3 idioms which have metaphor in it are chosen. Fables that have idioms are read to children and asked questions about the meaning of idioms in the fable. According to result of the study, as age increases, interpretation rises as well. While most of the children express idioms that used in real meaning, they have difficulty in stating figurative meaning. Even if most of the children do not know the meaning of the idiom; they get the topic of the fable in general.
