Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the concept of old age in the picture story books written for preschool children in Turkish and translated into Turkish. The research is based on a descriptive model of scanning and the control list created by the researchers is used as data collection tool. In the study, there are a total of 50 picture story books, 24 of them in Turkish and 26 of them translated into Turkish, in the sample taken from the population via the criterion sampling method. According to the results obtained from the study, elders and the concept of old age are not given much place in picture story books published in Turkey and most of the books in which elders are given place includes only one elder character. In the books with elder characters, it has been found that the female elders are more involved than the male elders, and in the majority of the books elders are not the main characters. According to these results, we present suggestions for the use of elders as a main character and give the more place in the picture story books in terms of preschool children being able to know the elderly better and to raise awareness of them.
