Abstract

This study was counducted to investigate the questioning experiences of classroom teachers in terms of the intellectual standards of socratic inquiry. 30 teachers were held using focus group interview method. Their answers were analyzed by descriptive analysis and content analysis method. Teachers expressed that, the first word that comes into their mind about asking questions is “learning” and also “Why?, doubt, think, know and future”. They said these words can be defined as the goal, tool, trigger and precondition of asking questions. Twelve of the teachers have negative experience from their teachers, peers and traditional perspective in the society, seven of the teachers have a positive experience from their teachers and families. When the questions that the teachers ask are examined in terms of socratic inquiry, it’s been reached that they ask questions related to clarity, precision, breadth but they don’t ask questions related to depth, relevance, logicalness and accuracy.
