Abstract

Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine the effects of listening to music during digital writing on the writing anxiety of pre-service teachers and on the textuality and fluidity of their writings. The study group consisted of 10 pre-service teachers studying at the primary education program of a public university in Turkey. In the quantitative phase of the mixed method research, it was found that the writing anxiety levels of the pre-service teachers decreased and fluency, cohesion and consistency scores increased significantly. In the qualitative phase of the research, pre-service teachers stated that their writing motivation increased while their anxiety about writing decreased. It was found that writing accompanied by music facilitates the selection of the topic and transformation into writing. It was also found that writing digitally has positive effects on writing in terms of customizability, efficiency, convenience, and accessibility. Listening to music while digital writing had positive effects on topic selection, retention of thoughts to be written, self-efficacy for writing, and motivation. However, as the process progresses, it was found that listening to music continuously and background music in general are obstructive in terms of focusing.
