Abstract

The purpose of this study is to reveal the perspectives and opinions of mathematics teachers working in high schools regarding the causes of problems and undesirable student behavior faced in classroom management, solutions for such problems and which qualifications every teacher should bear for an effective classroom management. To that end, a working group was comprised of randomly selected fourteen mathematics teachers working in high schools in the province of Kahramanmaras. Teachers in the working group were interviewed when they are available and research data were collected by means of semi-structured interviews. Content analysis was utilized in data analysis. Findings obtained were presented using frequency and percentage tables. As a result of the analysis of teachers’ responses, it was observed that the problems encountered in classroom management fell into two categories, namely student-driven problems and environment-related problems. Teachers stated that disinterestedness towards classes is the fundamental cause of the problems encountered in classroom management. They opined they strived to find solutions for the problems by giving close attention, teaching effectively and increasing students’ motivation to make them engage the course. They stated that every mathematics teacher should have a full knowledge of their branch, use technology effectively and be able to use different teaching methods, in order not to have problems in classroom management.
