Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the variables related to the loss experiences and grief process of psychological counselor candidates. Although the grief process that occurs after the losses is a natural and universal reaction, individuals may feel various troubles in any period; quality of life may decrease with loss; they may also need professional support due to physical, cognitive and behavioral difficulties. In order for psychological counselors to conduct an effective psychological counseling process, they need to be able to cope effectively with their own negative life experiences and learn how to manage their loss and mourning processes successfully. The research was designed in the phenomenological method in the qualitative research model. The study was carried out with 81 volunteer counselors who stated that there was any loss experience among 115 psychological counselor candidates attending 3rd and 4th grades of Burdur Mehmet Akif Ersoy University and İzmir Dokuz Eylül University PDR undergraduate programs. As a result majority of psychological counselor candidates experienced more death-related losses, especially family elders; a small number of psychological counselors received any professional support during the grief process; When coping strategies and feelings and thoughts about grief are examined, it is seen that they do not structure their grief in a healthy way. When the results are evaluated in terms of psychological counseling skills, it is seen that psychological counselor candidates need to learn how to cope effectively with the losses they experience and to structure the grief process. Based on the findings, it is seen as an important need to focus on the issue of loss and grief in psychological counselor training, to help psychological counselor candidates manage their own loss and grief processes in a cultivated way and to make efforts to gain grief counseling skills.
