EVALUATION OF FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING IN 2ND YEAR OF PRIMARY SCHOOL ACCORDING TO TEACHERS’ OPINIONS

Abstract

Foreign language teaching at school has been reduced gradually to an early age from past to present throughout the world. While it was taught previously early in 1st year of secondary school, foreign language teaching has entered into extensively primary school and even in some European countries kindergarten curriculum since the 1980s. In our country students began to learn a foreign language for the first time at 4th year of primary school in 1998 with the advent of eight-year compulsory education and with the 4 +4 +4 education program at 2nd year of primary school in 2013-2014 school term. The aim of this study is to make an assessment of the implementation process of teaching foreign language which began first at 2nd year of primary school in 2013-2014 school term in accordance with teachers’ opinions. The population of the study consists of 33 teachers of English teaching at 2nd year at the schools of Erzurum Directorate of National Education and who participated voluntarily in the present research. A survey with 3 open-ended questions was conducted onto teachers and the results were interpreted by a descriptive analysis and content analysis, two of the qualitative research methods. Language teachers supporting teaching foreign language at an early age put an emphasis on cognitive and personal characteristics of 6-7 year-old children studying in 2nd year of primary school. At this age children are quite curious and eager to learn a foreign language and don’t forget what they learn as long as the teaching methods are appropriate. It is observed that students interrogate various dimensions of teaching and that readiness level of some of them and technological resources in schoolrooms are insufficient for teaching foreign language in the 2nd year of primary school.
