THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LEADERSHIP BEHAVIORS OF SCHOOL PRINCIPALS AND AUTONOMOUS BEHAVIORS OF TEACHERS

Abstract

In this study, it was aimed to determine the relationship between leadership behaviors of school principals and autonomous behaviors of teachers. The population of the research designed in the screening model was composed of teachers working in primary, secondary and high schools in the center and districts of Muğla city in 2015-2016 academic year. The sample of the study was composed of 479 teachers determined by using disproportional cluster sampling technique. Leadership Styles Scale and Teacher Autonomy Scale of the school principals were used as data collection tools. In analysis of the data, descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, correlation and multiple regression analyses were used. According to the results of the research, school principals showed transformational leadership behaviors more, followed by transactional and laissez-faire leadership behaviors, respectively. Teachers' general autonomy behaviors were over medium level. There were positive and negative relationships between school principals' leadership behaviors and teacher autonomy. There was a positive and low level of relationship between general teacher autonomy behaviors and transformational leadership behaviors. However, there was a negative and low relationship between general teacher autonomy behaviors and transactional leadership behaviors and laissez-faire leadership behaviors. Leadership behaviors of school principals predicted 6.3% of the change in general teacher autonomy behavior.
