Abstract

Out-of-school environments are the most neglected educational environments by teachers, program developers and researchers. The purpose of the study is to examine the 5thgrade students’ views about planetariums. This study was carried on phenomenology method which is one of the qualitative research methods. There search was applied during the fall term of 2017-2018 academic year. The study is conducted with 50 5th grade students attending to a secondary school in Kayseri/Turkey. The data was obtained through semi-structured openended questions with the teachers. Interview form was formed and was controlled by two science education experts.Data analysis was conducted through content analysis.As a result of the interviews carried out after the planetarium trip, the students think that the planetarium trip is very effective in increasing the interest, desire and curiosity towards the science course. On the otherhand, students stated that a lesson in the planetarium provided a better understanding of the astronomy subjects. Students also believe that such learning environments are fun because they are visual. Therefore, students stated that such trips should be done more frequently in science teaching. Based on theresults of there search, recommendations were offered to the authorities.
