Abstract

The word abstract, which is the presentation of the correct reading, the understanding what you read and the outline of the original narration, is the common good of all the disciplines, especially the Turkish lesson. It is seen that the abstract concept, which is the shortest presentation of what is understood and expressed, takes place as a skill that must be taught in all stages of middle school Turkish Curriculum (MEB, 2017). This study aims to reveal the ability to summarize of the 5th grade students. The research is in case study pattern. Data were obtained from written documents of students who study in Hacı Celal Oto Middle School affiliated to Aydın province Efeler district in 2017-2018 Education Year. For the research, one of the texts in the Turkish textbooks was first handled and then the students were asked to summarize this text. As a result of the research, it has been determined that to be associated with each topic covered the students have succeeded at various levels (adequate, moderate, insufficient). Based on these findings, the features that should be found in a good summary have been tried to be put forward.
