Abstract

The present study investigates the effect of joining music bands within the context of selective music education on problem solving skills of primary education students. Scanning method was used in the study and the study group included 225 primary education students out of which 42 participated in the music band practices. Personal Information Form developed by the author and Problem Solving Inventory for Children developed by Serin, Serin and Saygılı (2010) were used as data collection tools. Study findings demonstrated that self-perception levels of the students in problem solving inventory for Children sub-dimensions were high. It was also observed that there was no significant difference between self-perception levels in problem solving inventory sub-dimensions based on the gender variable. Based on the grade level variable, it was found that self-perception levels of first level students in Confidence in Problem Solving Skills and Self-Control and Avoidance sub-dimensions were higher than self-perception levels of second level students. It was also determined that self-perception levels of students who participated in the music band were higher than the students who did not in Confidence in Problem Solving Skills and Self-Control and Avoidance sub-dimensions.
